We're calling these Image Based Upgrades and everything's public. There's a
wiki page for the spec: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ImageBasedUpgrades
You'll probably want to also check out the subpages of that, which go into
more detail on how the various parts work together. Not everything has been
implemented yet, but we're getting there. There's a link to the Launchpad
blueprint and project page where the code for the server and client (but not
yet the updater) lives.
Stephane Graber, Ondrej Kubik, and myself are currently responsible for
the various components, so feel free to ping one of us on #ubuntu-phone if you
have any questions or comments.
Cheers,
-Barry
