Sure! Switch the phone to read-write mode and then proceed as usual
with Ubuntu.
According to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/ReleaseNotes#Accessing_the_system_for_development,
"You can make the filesystem read/write using adb shell touch
/userdata/.writable_image and then adb reboot."
Note that this breaks updates, so after that you're on your own. Might
be better to use Ubuntu 13.10 for this then, rather than trusty.
