I don't know how to back up text messages. However, if I remember 
correctly, the messaging app uses Telepathy as its backend.
You may find some tutorial for that one or wait for other people to 
respond. ;)

What I can offer is a script I wrote some time ago for backing up files 
(including app data). Check it out at 
https://github.com/nikwen/phablet-scripts.
