You might be interested to know we recently seeded openvpn packages in
the vivid images. This should mean that soon you could VPN to a remote
host for your internet traffic, which may be preferable to using a
proxy. I don't believe that openvpn is hooked up to the network
indicator / network manager on the phone yet, but you could certainly
manually configure it via the command line (much as you and other
suggest using iptables).
I've not configured openvpn via the command line myself, but I know
others on this list have. They may well step up and detail how to set
it up on the phone.
