Just a quick thought:

I've always imagined a free version of a Pogoplug to solve the whole
sync discussion with ubuntu phone.

Something like Owncloud running on one of these that just kind of
'works' with low power.  Syncs up your photos, videos, contacts,
calendar and maybe connects with mom's and best friends freedom box to
allow for multiple off-site backup of said personal data.

Something plug-and-play but not running through a website like pogoplug...

just a quick thought...
