I was personally a little disappointed when the ability to change the "home screen" background image went away. 

I'm still hoping that it will be back some day.

All in all I agree with the writer of the article, Linux has always been highly customizable, flexible and not limited.

I would be really happy to customize the scopes scope background and re-arrange the apps to my liking.
