Adding torrents works now. And you can customize the server URL and add user/password as needed.
You can get update notifications from github by "watching" the project. I don't know if there's a way to get a news feed for it.

Yes. You either need to have a Transmission desktop client where remote access is enabled or Transmission server. Then the app lets you browse the torrents and see how they're progressing.

 I've just bought an M10 Ubuntu Edition and I couldn't find any

 client for Ubuntu Phone in the store.

 I would like to try and write one, but I don't want to duplicate
efforts, so I was wondering if there is already someone working on

 If I go ahead, I was considering using/porting the core of
Transmission and make a qml interface for it, do you think it's a 
 viable option? I'm a developer but I'm new to Ubuntu Phone
 development.

 (P.S. Is there any chance, even remote, to write Ubuntu Phone
 applications in Rust? I would like to try the language :)
