Calendar design & feature thoughts
Hi
After a few months of Ubuntu Phone use on the MX4, a few thoughts about
the calendar.
1. Views: I think the default number of hours shown in day and week view
is too few. Ideally I like to see around 10 - 12 hours of the day at
one time. At the moment I find I can scroll past a day and miss events
as they are out of the view, and there is too much scrolling up and down
in those views. Ideally it would be customisable - both the number of
hours shown and the start time of day.
2. Deleting calendars: there doesn't seem to be a way to delete
calendars in the list. I created multiple calendars while trying out
sync options and had to go looking in the evolution back end to delete
them from the command line (still can't find a way to get rid of the
default "Personal" one).
3. Unchecked calendars show up in create event dialog: I think if a
calendar has been unchecked in the calendar list and so is not being
used it shouldn't show up in the create event dialog. Alternatively it
should be possible to select a default calendar for new events to be
created in.
4. Sync: very disappointing that the only officially supported sync
option is Google. I think there should be a generic CalDAV option to
support ownCloud and similar (which ideally would be an account login
that enabled all data on the ownCoud server to be synced with the
phone). I've tried setting up sync to an ownCloud server, but only got
it working one-way (from the phone to ownCloud), and only via a manual
sync from the command line. Tried a few crontab solutions that are
online for auto-syncing, but haven't got that working yet, so have
reluctantly gone back to Google Calendar for now, as the DIY option has
been too unreliable.
Having moved to Ubuntu Phone from iPhone and from Android before that,
one of the attractions of Ubuntu Phone is the possibility if ditching
Apple & Google for cloud services.
Hope at least some of this is useful feedback.
Thanks
Warren
