Hi all,

Here are the final notes from the conversation during the Platform
Sprint regarding debain-installer changes in Karmic. I'm forwarding this
to the Ubuntu Translations Coordinators team so that they are aware of
this.

== Changes in d-i translations for Karmic ==

      * The current ubiquity and oem-config templates only contain
        translations for .desktop files.
      * Translations previously found in debian-installer are going to
        be split and carried over to the ubiquity template.
      * oem-config is now built from the ubiquity source and shares its
        template.
      * The question on how to carry over the translations from the
        debian-installer template to the newly split templates remains:
              * This will not happen automatically, as the new message
                sharing feature in Launchpad only works across the same
                templates in different distro series.
              * A workaround would be to let translators do this: the
                "global suggestions" feature in Launchpad allows
                translations from the previous d-i releases to appear as
                suggestions in the new oem-config and ubiquity
                templates. Translators would only have to point and
                click to use those suggestions as translations.
                Automatically importing the translations (be it by
                manually merging them or by letting Launchpad do it)
                would be preferred.
              * The installer team could do this manually, but
                translation attribution on a string basis would be lost.
              * UPDATE: after having talked with Danilo, the bottom line
                is that it would be very hard to do this in Launchpad
                (i.e. with database queries), so the preferred approach
                is that the installer team does the merge. Regarding
                attributions, it would be desirable that the resulting
                ubiquity translations at least have the Last-Translator
                field set in the header. The Ubuntu Translations
                Coordinators team can probably offer some help.
      * David to document the changes in
        https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/Upstream/Debian/DebianInstaller and announce them to Ubuntu translators.
      * QUESTION: is the real-po template in the ubiquity imports queue
        [1] the only one we need to approve?

== Translated timezones ==

Timezones are going to be translatable in Karmic, as per the feature
implemented by Mike Terry (subsequent comments by Mike):

"So, with translated timezones the user experience is mostly similar.
They still see two dropdowns on the bottom of the timezone map.  The one
on the left is still called 'Regions' and shows at the top a list of
countries you are likely to live in based on your language choice, then
a list of continents.

As you select a country or continent, the dropdown on the right (renamed
'Zones') is filled out with timezones in your selected region.  For
countries with one timezone, the country name is shown.  For countries
with more than one timezone, the dropdown will show "Country (City)".

For some countries, like the US, the right dropdown will also feature a
list of timezones that those denizens are more familiar with (Eastern
instead of New York)."

* In which template can they be found?

"Timezones pull their translations from many sources:
 * The translations for countries and continents (the left dropdown)
come from localechooser (d-i).  This generally has pretty good coverage
already.
 * The translations for each timezone (the right dropdown) come from the
source package icu.
 * If a timezone isn't translated in icu, we fallback to getting the
"Country" bit from localechooser and the "(City)" bit from tzdata.  And
we just stick those bits together.  Which isn't ideal (for example, in
zh there shouldn't be a space between the parentheses and the country
and I assume there are issues with RTL languages), but icu has pretty
good coverage already, and hopefully users won't see too many of these.
 * The country-specific list of zones ("Eastern" instead of "New York")
comes from tzsetup (d-i).

So in summation, the translations come from localechooser, tzsetup, icu,
and tzdata."

* Is there any work required from the translation teams to enable them?

"No, besides fleshing out (in order of importance), localechooser, icu,
tzsetup, and tzdata translations."

== Other ==

      * There are still some untranslated bits in the installer. The
        installer team has got them in their todo list and will go
        through those items in the next few weeks.
      * Colin would find automatically exporting translations to a bzr
        branch very useful for d-i, but this feature is still not
        implemented for source packages
