Ubuntu 10.10 on an Asus Eee 1001P

Sorry Joseph, you'll get this twice because I forgot to send it to the
list the first time.

I too had issues with Unity. I had heard that it'd been touted as
AMAZING and wonderful. It is very visually pleasing, but I noticed
major lack of functionality in some areas.

10.04 is a LTS (I can't remember exactly what the acronym stands for),
so it is more stable, and more of an enterprise level release. The
"interim" releases are not quite as polished. A 2 year release cycle
(the LTS) is STILL faster than Windows' releases.

I am keeping 10.04 on my netbook for now, but running 10.10 on my
desktop. The fun part of that is that my video card that worked fine
in 10.04 doesn't work in 10.10. I downgraded the kernel (surprisingly
easier than expected) and now have video again.

I would suggest either going back to 10.04 or trying ubuntuforums or
irc. There are lots of resources available. I will take a look to see
if I can find any info about your specific issues. As far as the
numlock thing, check your bios settings. I recall seeing on my
computer's bios the option to boot with numlock on. This may or may
not be the answer, but it is at least something to check.

I'll respond again if I find anything of note. Good luck.
