After restarting (either the computer or Xorg), then logging-in, the
desktop does not always expand across both the monitors hooked-up to the
ATi X600 graphics card. Instead the left screen is mirrored on both
monitors. Also, it seems possible to move the mouse into where the
desktop should extend (if that makes sense!)

Both monitors are set to 1600x1200 resolution, configured by gnome-
display-properties.

Crazy stuff I've tried to fix this:
 1. Using xserver-xorg-video-ati - 1:6.12.99+git20090611.d095bb31-0ubuntu0tormod2 and xserver-xorg-video-radeon - 1:6.12.99+git20090611.d095bb31-0ubuntu0tormod2 from Tormod Volden's PPA (https://launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive/ppa?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=jaunty) I still have these installed at time of filing this bug report. Obviously, I'm using the open source ATi drivers, since the X600 is no longer supported.

 2. Tried using a Jaunty Live CD with the instructions under 'Testing
with a live CD/media' at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XorgOnTheEdge but it
didn't work*.

 * In fact: both stock Ubuntu Xorg and the bleeding edge packages
initially failed in a completely different way to what's described in
this bug, however I believe that is a different problem, so will try to
describe it in a separate bug report.
