[Bug 690552] [NEW] Wrong video port used at boot

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

New installation of Ubuntu 10.10, 64-bit.

Video card is an nVidia 9600 GSO with VGA and DVI outputs.
Connected to monitor with the DVI connector.

Booting from Live CD works fine, and installation is carried out without
a hitch.

After completing the installation process, the system attempts its first
boot using the built in video drivers. After loading from Grub, the
video goes dead and the system becomes unresponsive.

After some experimentation, I discovered that the system was booting
successfully, but it was attempting to use the unconnected VGA output on
my video card. After fighting with the driver settings and swapping
various video cables back and forth, I was able to achieve video output
from the DVI connection. Any workaround that doesn't involve fighting
with multiple display cables would be acceptable until an actual fix is
provided.
