Hmm, sounds like a race condition.  In theory, all the same software and
settings get reloaded when you do a warm reboot like that.  However, the
timing/order that they get loaded can vary.

Can you also describe in further detail how it "fails"?  E.g. does it
just hang with a blank screen, or crash with a kernel panic, or show
weird colors and lockup...?
