Hi Daniel,

So this is my take on the issue based on your results :

1) the function call commented out by Bryces patch fixes on_expose from
being called continuously. That function creates a new expose event making
on_expose call again.

2) the above causes the high cpu regardless of memory leak

3) the patch is provided fixes the memory leak for the pixmap that isn't
cleared.

So combined the two patches seem correct, but the original problem with
necessity to refresh the panel remains.
