[Bug 734069] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon unresponsive/broken at login

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

First off, yes. I'm running the NVIDIA drivers. This is not related, though. I have had this issue under multiple conditions:
1. With an ATI card, running -either- open source or proprietary drivers. (this was very oddly fixed by adding 'radeon.modeset=0' to the kernel command line though)
2. With the current NVIDIA card, running the default 'vesa' driver or with the proprietary NVIDIA driver.

In the open source ATI driver or vesa driver cases, I'm running a
completely untouched fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick.

The issue is that on login, Gnome themes aren't being properly applied.
I pinned this down to an unresponsive gnome-settings-daemon. I don't
know if gnome-settings-daemon -normally- ignores SIGTERM, but I actually
had to use SIGKILL to terminate it. Then running 'gnome-settings-daemon'
in a terminal suddenly caused the themes to show up as expected. For
some reason, this fixes everything but Nautilus, which has to be killed
with SIGTERM and then starts with the proper themes applied.

I'm not sure what logs are relevant, so please let me know what I can do
to help debug this issue.
