Identical issue here but the "echo sleep 5 >
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/50slowdownthere" has worked for me.

Ubuntu 10.10 2.6.35-28-generic x86_64
AMD Phenom X6 (6 core 3.2 Ghz), SSD storage & Nvidia GFX (using Nvidia binary driver),
