[Bug 751927] [NEW] fglrx fails to come up and hangs the system

Public bug reported:

Several things happened when I tried to access apport. Here is my console log.
john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ man apport
No manual entry for apport
john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ ubuntu-bug fglrx

and then I finally was able to get this
john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ bin/bugger fglrx
Description:	Ubuntu Natty (development branch)
Release:	11.04
fglrx:
  Installed: 2:8.840-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2:8.840-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2:8.840-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/restricted amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
(Yes, I do have a script for this)
I am running on "low graphics mode". The above is not too surprising for a beta, but back to fglrx.

Earlier I reported a bug on this item, then I got an update and this is
what happened.

1. Something went wrong with my hard drive and the partition table seems
to be scrambled, however I have a off-line backup system and was able to
download the beta 1 disk.

2. After saving as much as I could of my hard disk content, I built a new boot sector, and repartitioned the disk, then installed
the 11.4 beta1 disk. It sort of failed, but I got up enough to run dpkg from the boot, and this seemed to clear up the problem. I was able to boot, and it gave me a look at Unity. Not sure I like it, but time will tell.
3. Following the usual procedure for drivers, I activated fglrx, which then wanted a boot, so I did.
4. On come up, the system hangs, not listening to either keyboard or mouse (much). I was forced to reboot using SysRq emergency orderly shutdown.
5. I was able to reboot on Low Grapphics (sans fglrx)

When the fglrx mess first started, characterized by large black areas, I
was able to get a screen shot. I will add the URL for this after I get
back to 10.10 and can place the image on my web pages. This will be
later this afternoon, I suppose, since once this is filed, I am
switching back to my production system.

I hope this helps in various areas, but I really wish AMD would get on
with it.

Oh, and just in case you wanted the installer facts, here they are:

john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ bin/bugger fglrx-installer
Description:	Ubuntu Natty (development branch)
Release:	11.04
N: Unable to locate package fglrx-installer
john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ bin/bugger "fglrx-installer"
Description:	Ubuntu Natty (development branch)
Release:	11.04
N: Unable to locate package fglrx-installer

Hmm, that doesn't seem to be present.

And yes my script is OK

john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ apt-cache policy fglrx-installer
N: Unable to locate package fglrx-installer

Good luck on this, the new release is looking interesting.
