[Bug 763101] Re: Only standard (low) resolution on ati-driver

Yeah your monitor is not reporting its capabilities properly

[ 560.152] (II) RADEON(0): EDID for output VGA-0
[ 560.152] (II) RADEON(0): Printing probed modes for output VGA-0
[ 560.152] (II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1024x768"x60.0 65.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync (48.4 kHz)

[ 560.180] (II) RADEON(0): EDID for output DVI-0
[ 560.180] (II) RADEON(0): Output HDMI-0 disconnected
[ 560.180] (II) RADEON(0): Output VGA-0 connected
[ 560.180] (II) RADEON(0): Output DVI-0 disconnected
[ 560.180] (II) RADEON(0): Using fuzzy aspect match for initial modes

The xrandr output shows the same thing.

Have you tested this with a different monitor (of a different model)?
If it is indeed a monitor EDID issue it should work in that case.

This bug indicates this is a fresh installation rather than an upgrade,
is that correct? Had you had linux installed on it previously, and if
so did the monitor work out of the box in that case?

You have a monitors.xml file that lists 1280x1024, which afaik can't
have that value unless the system detected it (or you manually added
it). Do you know how that got set in that file? It is created by using
the gnome-display-properties applet.

You have an xorg.conf but it is unnecessary. I don't think the values
set in it could cause this bug; still, you may as well delete it, it's
unneeded.

Please install xdiagnose and turn on "Extra graphics debug messages"
(the first checkbox), reproduce the bug, and then run 'dmesg >
dmesg.txt' and attach the dmesg.txt file to this bug report. This will
hopefully give some additional information about why the EDID is not
showing up.

Please also install the 'read-edid' and run `sudo get-edid > edid.dat`
and attach edid.dat here. (It will probably merely show a failure but
it's worth a try.)

Finally, tell me the brand, model, and model number of your monitor.
