[Bug 773691] [NEW] No brigthness on Gateway Nv7915u laptop

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Upon booting up my laptop, I'm welcomed to a black screen (black as in
there is no backlight, but I can see that the login screen is displayed
if I look very closely).

To actually be able to see the login screen, I need to close my screen
for a few seconds and then open it again. After doing so, everything is
displayed with full brightness. Unfortunately, full brightness is all I
could get. I can't adjust the brightness at all.

If I press the keys that should reduce the brightness, I get the brightness bar showing me that it's registering that I'm pressing the buttons (the bar fills up or empties accordingly), but the brightness never actually changes. I've tried going into screen preferences and sliding the brightness bar manually, but the brightness still doesn't change.
I tried to do a clean install but I couldn't because the installer had no light at all and closing and opening my screen didn't help.

I also had this problem with 10.10, except there was a certain kernel
that was able to load with the back light and everything, so I kept
using that (unfortunately, even that didn't let me change the brightness
settings, it was just good enough for me not to have to close and open
my screen).
