[Bug 773657] Re: Xorg crash

Just tried "sudo aticonfig --initial" which showed an error about a missing fglrx-glx.so,
but did create a new /etc/X11/xorg.conf although a "sudo restart gdm" still failed.
Then changed in this new /etc/X11/xorg.conf the driver "fglrx" into "ati" and now "sudo restart gdm" starts X.
Finally!!!!!

A popup dialog showed that unity does not work on this hardware. :(

I tried to get back to a text mode console ctrl-alt-1, but this did not work.. blank screen and I can't get back to X.
Strangely trying text mode again (ctrl-alt-1) started to show the entire screen in green-red-blue-etc.. (color cycle).
Some new feature?..

Rebooted and now ubuntu starts immediately in my gnome Desktop (no login
screen anymore?).

With "update manager" noticed some more upgrades are present.. (In the
commandline earlier I tried "apt-get update/upgrade", but that did not
see these upgrades).

Rebooted.. now grub boot menu shows pink bankground (was previously a debian earth picture ;)
Hangs again.. did not see a prompt for decryption password, so probably related to that.

Rebooted.. now the prompt showed and X starts with my Desktop again.

Tried even "additional drivers" and selecting fglrx, which took a long time to activate.
When finally endde3d and after reboot once again it also worked.

Just noticed "Appearance" n olonger showed the option visual effects..
but must be 10.04 'feature' :(

Anyway.. I can work again.
So maybe this report can benefit someone else that has this problem.

And for developers.. please prevent this kind of problems in the future.
I did not have any problems with upgrades before.
