[Bug 406121] [NEW] nVIDIA Driver 185.18.14 (32bit linux) stops working if updating Ubuntu after driver is installed

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I've managed to make this happen twice, with clean Ubuntu installations
( Ubuntu 9.04 - the Jaunty Jackalope ).

Steps I used first time:

1. Clean install of Ubuntu (format existing partitions, no upgrades)
2. Install driver from www.nvidia.com (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.14-pkg1.run)
3. Everthing works fine, desktop effects enabled, opengl games are working etc.
4. Ubuntu pops-up update window, bunch of updates listed, so I didn't check it thoroughly, just clicked "ok".
5. After update, gdm fails, and pops-up options (in low-res screen) to either reconfigure display, use previously saved display setup etc. Works only if display is reconfigured to use Ubuntu's initial display mode (without nvidia drivers)
6. Tried to uninstall nvidia driver, to be able to install it again. Uninstall reports bunch of nVIDIA files missing for uninstallation (?)

Steps I used second time:

1. Clean install
2. Update Ubuntu first
3. Install driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.14-pkg1.run)
4. Everything works fine, desktop effects, opengl games...
5. Install Blender, OpenOffice, driver works without problems.
6. After few days, Ubuntu pops-up update window, unfortunately I didn't write down what was updated (is there a way to list system updates from specific date? I'm new in Linux/Ubuntu waters..).
7. driver stops working, same as (5) in first time.

Hardware I use:

ASUS a8js (laptop)

- nvidia 7700 go 512mb
- Core2 duo 2ghz intel
- 2gb ram
- display 1440 x 900

Hope this helps.
