[Bug 813989] [NEW] X server freezes after login from GDM

Public bug reported:

Hi there

Please find my question on launchpad at:
http://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/164868

I am not sure exactly where the bug is, but this is what happens: I am
running an HP Compaq 615 laptop with a an AMD X2 Dual-Core Processor
QL-64, and an ATI Raedon 3200 GPU. After a clean install, I am able to
log in with no problems from the GDM with the default installed driver:
either xserver-xorg-video-ati, or xserver-xorg-video-raedon (I'm not
sure what the default open driver is).

Problem:
After a couple of logins, the screen/computer just freezes after log in, and I have to do a hard shutdown/restart. There is no mouse cursor, and the keyboard does not respond to any command, not even the Caps Lock light. The screen is most often black, but it is sometimes also the default Ubuntu dark purple.

The interim fix/workaround for this problem is to install the
proprietary "fglrx" driver. That restores functionality, albeit with
poorer performance, but reverting to the open driver(s) brings back the
freezing.

Thank you for your patience with my first bug report. :-)
