[Bug 819449] [NEW] Dell Latitude x300 notebook screen display problem

Public bug reported:

After installing Ubuntu 11.04, I updated on 7/31/2011 with all available
updates. On the next reboot, first there was no screen display on the
built-in LED 1024x768 display. I rebooted and chose the recovery boot
option. I was given the option to use a low-res display, which I did.
The screen was displayed, but there was a blank part of the display
along the bottom of the built-in 1024x768 LED display, and the top-of-
screen default menu bar was invisible, but accessible by "blind-mousing"
into the appropriate area off the visible screen at the top. By going
to "System Settings" and "Monitors", I could see that the screen driver
attempted to run at 1024x768 (but at 0Hz refresh?). My only other
selectable option for screen resolution was 800x600 at 60Hz refresh. I
chose this and applied it. The screen became immediately completely
corrupted and unusable, BUT after the fallback timer kicked in, the
screen was restored to its proper usable configuration, with menu bar
visible and no unused blank space on the bottom of the 1024x768 LED
screen. After this, everything appears normal. This behavior recurs on
each boot-up.
