Affects me too with the very same computer model (8540w) as well as the
latest nVidia binary drivers for the Quadro FX 1800M card. This was not
the case with Ubuntu 10.10/Gnome.  I have not found a pattern when the
red screen appears, but it usually happens a few (2-5) times a work day.

Except when beening inside a vmware image, it is easy to get rid of the
red screen. Just switch to another virtual desktop or move the mouse
around for a while.
