[Bug 859934] [NEW] screen corruption and system freeze during boot

Public bug reported:

I upgraded to 11.10 yesterday, and after the upgrade was done and I
restarted, the screen froze during boot. I rebooted again, and was
presented with grub, I chose the "recovery mode" and it booted normally,
but (needless to say), no 3D (hence no Unity).

I'm running the open source ati drivers.

I then installed the proprietry driver (fglrx), and the system booted
normally.

I then uninstalled fglrx and reinstalled the open source drivers again,
using instructions from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver#Problem
:__Need_to_fully_remove_-fglrx_and_reinstall_-ati_from_scratch

sudo /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh # (if it exists)
    sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*
    sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon
    sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
    sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

After rebooting, the freezing problem occurs again.

A few days ago, I ran 11.10 from a live USB on this same machine, and it
booted without any problem. In fact I've been doing this for a while
now. I'm pretty sure it was running Unity 3D. For one thing, the dash
blurring was "active blur", meaning I could play a video and see it
blurred behind the dash.

Slightly offtopic, but it might be worth mentioning that even when I
installed fglrx, Unity still didn't run, because
'GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object not supported'

Also, for what it's worth, the open source radeon driver has been
working fine for me since before 11.04, and I had no problem running
Unity on it.
