[Bug 880882] [NEW] X starts with garbled screen, restarting X from cli fixes

Public bug reported:

I am running an Asus eeePC 1101HA with a (dreaded) Poulsbo video card. I
upgraded from Natty to Oneric, and X wouldn't start anymore. Under Natty
I ran X with fbdev driver since the default driver would break
suspend/resume. I had applied the fix from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsPoulsboAlternatives
to get 1366x768 resolution.

After upgrading and trying all kinds of things to fix this, the situation is as follows:
- Apparently, under kernel 3.0.0.12, the 'correct' way to run X is with fbdev, which is accellerated by a kernel module of either 'poulsbo' or 'psb_gfx'. I have re-enabled the fix from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsPoulsboAlternatives to get native resulution, under either vesa or fbdev. (If there is some other driver comination I should try, please tell me.) Without this workaround I can only get 640x480 resolution.
- I can start and run under the VESA driver, everything works fine but screen updates in video are sloooooow.
- I can run the system with the fbdev driver enabled. If I do this X starts up with a garbled screen. How it is garbled depends on the exact settings I'm using, but one common way is that each row of pixels is shifted a dozen pixels or so compared to the row above it.

I have tried this last fbdev setup with several settings:
- I have tried blacklisting 'poulsbo' and/or 'psb_gfx' in all four combinations in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. If poulsbo gets loaded, X starts up with a garbled screen, but if I log into a console and kill X it restarts correctly. If poulsbo is blacklisted, X is garbled and stays garbled if I kill it. Disabling psb_gfx did not have any visible results.
- I have played a bit with the GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX variable in /etc/default/grub. Different settings result in different ways the screen gets garbled, but otherwise there's no difference. Some settings of this variable cause even the text console to be garbled.

I have also tried starting the system with the 2.6.38 kernel, which was
the default before the upgrade, but to no avail.

I suspect the problem is with the video mode transition from GRUB to X
which somehow fails, while the transition to/from textmode works. (note:
after startup, switching to a text console and back to X without
restarting X does not fix the problem)

I tried running a fresh Oneric from live usb, but it resulted in bug
#880580. For completeness, after upgrade I also had a problem with
sound, but that appears to be unrelated and has a workaround available
(#825709).
