My HP laptop hangs after 20 - 30 seconds after X starts. I'm using nvidia-current (same with post release updates). It works with driver 173 but of course much slower compared to the power of this GPU.
During the period of the 20  - 30 seconds, I change to VT console (Ctrl - Alt - F1) and I can "grab" some information. From kerl.log I found this:
