Message #15871
[Bug 387013] [NEW] Ubuntu unusable by default with ATI HD4670 video card + monitor on DVI link (blank screen).
You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Hardware:
Some recent AMD-based machine: Phenom II 810, AMD 790FX chipset, 8Gb RAM with ATI HD4670 video card.
(lspci of mentioned machine attached). Monitor attached over DVI link.
Problem:
Ubuntu is booting fine BUT when it comes to starting X server, it misbehaves. Display reports "no signal" and switches to power-down mode. System is alive but can't output picture to the screen.
Workarounds:
You can press F4 in boot menu and select safe graphice mode to force VESA drivers. Then Ubuntu could display picture properly.
The worst problem here is that when system already installed, there is
no longer option in boot loader to boot with safe graphic settings (i.e.
using VESA drivers) so it is possible to get in stuck (looks especially
funny when you're replacing older card with such card). So, quite tricky
actions could be required to get Ubuntu running with such video cards
(you have somehow to boot with VESA and activate proprietary driver -
the only driver which currently supports such cards properly).
** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu)
Importance: Medium
Status: Incomplete
