[Bug 378532] [NEW] Fewer display resolutions after upgrading to Jaunty with GeForce4

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After a clean install of Jaunty, Display Settings no longer detects
resolutions above 800x600 for my monitor (LG L1770GQ). I attempted to
add the undetected resolutions by adding a mode in xrandr as described
in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution.

Running "gtf 1280 1024 60" returned

 "# 1280x1024 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 63.60 kHz; pclk: 108.88 MHz
  Modeline "1280x1024_60.00" 108.88 1280 1360 1496 1712 1024 1025 1028 1060 -HSync +Vsync"

So, I attempted "xrandr --newmode "1280x1024" 108.88 1280 1360 1496
1712 1024 1025 1028 1060 -HSync +Vsync", followed by "xrandr --addmode
default 1280x1024". Unfortunately "xrandr --output default --mode
1280x1024" returned "xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed"

Strangely enough, all resolutions are automagically detected when using
vesa, but of course I'd prefer to use nv.

I'm out of ideas here. Help please.
