[Bug 422301] [NEW] Ubuntu Karmic: Displays output is incorrect when set as dual monitor
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: xorg
Problem to set up dual monitor using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. I am dealing with fresh install of the system. I try to set up dual monitor video output for my laptop. I try to do it with graphical interface (System -> Preferences - > Display).
After unchecking option "Mirror screens", setting proper resolution and position of both monitors and trying to apply the changes, both monitors become completely black. At the left side edge of the left monitor, there is 1-2 pixel-wide stripe of some image, seems to be the rest of desktop. Mouse cursor, however, is fully available and could be moved through both screens. After this happens, I can't change terminal to kill xorg. System refuses to restart and only the way is to shut down the computer and turn it on again.
The resolutions I try to set:
LVDS1 (laptop monitor) 1024x768
VGA1 (external monitor) 1280x1024, 1152x864, 1024x768 - neither works.
The resolution of both displays is detected correctly and GUI tool show
them correctly. The same configuration tried in Windows XP and Fedora 11
works perfectly. Such setting for the displays works well also for
Ubuntu 9.04, but the system was extremely slow.
When one of the monitors is off, the other works well on any resolution.
Detail info:
System version:
Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10
Xorg version:
apt-cache policy xorg
xorg:
Installed: 1:7.4+3ubuntu5
Candidate: 1:7.4+3ubuntu5
Version table:
*** 1:7.4+3ubuntu5 0
500 http://cz.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Video card:
lspci -nn | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller [8086:2592] (rev 03)
Computer: IBM Lenovo X41 tablet
Architecture: i386
How to reproduce:
1). Go to System->Preferences->Display
2). Uncheck option "Mirror screens"
3). Make sure both displays are on
4). Press button "Apply"
What happens:
Screen gets black on both displays.
1-2 pixel thin vertical stripe appear on the left side of the left monitor, with probably the part of desktop.
Mouse cursor is available and freely moves through both displays.
What should happen:
The video should be outputted on two monitors independently, with a mouse cursor moving between two screens (usual dual monitor output).
Thanks for fixing this in advance.
I can provide more information, if you need.
I am NOT sure that the problematic application is Xorg.
Sorry also for my poor English.
