[Bug 422780] [NEW] nvidia settings ignored on reboot.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

with karmic the nvidia 185 driver was used but on boot up the screen was
in 640x480 and had to be set by nvidia-settings to 1440x900 each time.

Apart from the permissions problem (not being able to write to xorg.conf without root permissions)
The settings even when written were being ignored.

The solution (work around) is to choose preferences -> display and
answer no in the dialog that appears that says the tool can't work with
the graphics card, and i would i like to use the vendors instead.

This allows the default resolution to be set and persists across
reboots.

obviously there are 2 problems here a failure to raise permissions when
needed and the over riding of the nvidia-settings with the (gnome ?
ones), Even using kdm as a display manager had the same issue.

The initial problem was caused by an upgrade from 180 - 185 nvidia
driver which failed to install the nvidia driver. which forced me to a
console where i used vesa to get a working desktop.

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
