[Bug 423440] [NEW] Karmic resumes from suspend to a black screen

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The kernel update 2.6.31-8 introduced a bug where when KDE resumes from
suspend it displays a black screen and the mouse pointer. When you are
in this state you can actually unlock the screen and move your mouse
pointer around. The cursor changes shapes to indicate when you're over
text or a hyperlink. The screen remains black, however. You can switch
TTYs and then "pkill kdm" then you are able to log back and things work
normally.

I believe that this is related to bug #421736, because I experience
those symptoms when using Gnome. These bugs also seem to have been
introduced at the same time. As a workaround is there an equivalent way
to kill the display manager in KDE, the equivalent of doing "kill -9
compiz.real"?
