So it appears that what's broken is the automatic resolution detection.
The default "Resolution" setting is "Auto", and if left unchanged, I'm
unable to get the HDMI attached monitor to work.

If on the other hand, I actually pick a resolution, like 1600x1200, the
monitor works.

I haven't tried this with a VGA attached monitor yet.
