[Bug 428595] [NEW] Radeon DRI R300 driver freezes X-server with some OpenGL apps

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Hi,

there are two independent confirmations that Kubuntu 9.04 32bit freezes
randomly (including the mouse pointer) when running some more demanding
OpenGL applications using the built-in open source Radeon DRI R300
driver.

To reproduce the problem:

1) Run Kubuntu 9.04 32bit with a Radeon graphics card of the R300 family
(I just started the Live CD)

2) type 'glxinfo | grep OpenGL' and verify that this is your current
driver:

DRI R300 20060815

(I'm wondering: is the latest Kubuntu really using a three year old
driver from 2006?)

3) Start for example the YASARA molecular modeling program which you can
download from http://www.yasara.org/viewdl

4) Click Help > Play help movie > Working with YASARA

5) Click on the 'Continue' button a few times, soon the computer freezes
completely.

Many thanks for your help,
Elmar
