[Bug 435011] [NEW] xorg takes 100% CPU, UI unresponsive

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I didn't know if I should add a 'me too' to Bug# 434416 or file a new bug. My symptoms are similar, but my hardware and drivers are different.
I have an AMD 64-bit, originally running Intrepid, then upgraded (not a clean install) to Jaunty when it was officially released. My recollection is that my system was rock solid until about the third week of July 2009, when I experienced my first crash, since then seemingly random crashes and seem to be getting more frequent. There is no syslog message corresponding to the freeze.
When the freeze occurs, my computer appears totally unresponsive: Ctrl-Alt-F1 does not take me to a terminal, and Ctrl-Alt-Bkspce does not restart X, but Ctrl-SysRq-R-E-I-S-U-B does reboot. I am unable to SSH into the machine during a freeze, and it does not respond to a network PING.
I recently downgraded my Nvidia driver from 180 to 173, but this did not improve anything. I've also tried booting to an earlier kernel (specifically 2.6.28-11-generic, which is earlier than my problems starting), but again no improvement.
My machine froze again last night. I was running top through an ssh connection at the time of the freeze-up, and have attached a copy of the screen to this posting. Xorg is consuming 100% of the CPU, after about 20 hours uptime.
