Some more details why it is important to allow forcing the usage of vesa
driver in xorg when installing Ubuntu-Desktop:

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo E5600, using the infamous SIS761GX
graphic chipset. These PCs are current sold very cheap in  thousands of
used auctions and 2nd hand computer stores, as these are leasing returns
of the german government. It is forseeable that there will be many
people using this pc for learning Linux or having a cheap office pc, as
the onboard graphics controller is not able to accelerate 3d functions.

Back to the SIS 761/760 chip. The developer of the sis drivers for xorg
already complained about this controller  (See:
http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsispart1.shtml#13 ). When xorg is
autodetecting the graphics controller, it still uses the sis xorg
driver, which will never ever work correctly with this chipset. However
the xorg-vesa driver works like a charm.

So allowing to force vesa in the installation xorg server (via
xforcevesa or using the option safe graphics mode in the boot menu)
would allow a clean installation.

Attached to this comment is a typical screen with large broken bands
(which gets worser when there is more traffic on the memory bus)
