[Bug 445881] [NEW] too old xorg server in 9.10 desktop install causes issues with forcevesa / safe graphics installation

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When trying to install the current Beta of Ubuntu 9.10 (desktop-installation image), there graphical issues with i.e. SIS 761GX onboard graphic-controllers. These "could" be fixed when using the option "Safe Graphic mode" or even better: xforcevesa in the boot options.

Both doesn't work as you can see in the Xorg.log file attached to this
bug report.

The Issie isn't unkown, as it was fixed in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/285562 for Ubuntu
8.10 and with the package xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu2 the bugfix was included in
Ubuntu.

However the Installation Image for the current Ubuntu 9.10 still uses
Xorg 1.6.3 instead of the fixed modern one, which is already 1 year old.

Some general infos to the emergency of this bug:

As I can see, there are several other users having graphics problems
installing Ubuntu 9.10 when using safe-graphics. Most of these issues
would be fixed with a working functionality of forcing xorg server to
use vesa-driver only.

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
