As mentioned in bug #378391, "going to System -> Preferences -> Mouse ->
Touchpad and checking "Enable mouse clicks with touchpad" fixes the
problem."

And to enable middle click on the top right I have to run
 synclient RTCornerButton=2

I think these options should be enabled by default.
