I ran the batch tests again under Metacity (after downloading all updates, including a new -intel driver) and it completed successfully.  The results are here:

They seem better than they were, but still faster with CPU than XRender.

The latest GTKperf gives:

It also feels a *lot* better to use than it did when I reported the bug,
so well done on the improvement so far!
