Binary package hint: xorg

Resolution is set as 1600x1200, though the screen of my laptop can
handle only 1024x768.

It results in most of the view being off screen. Can be corrected in
gnome settings, but it won't work for gdm screen and usplash, which
looks odd and makes logging in difficult.

When I try to manually override autodetection by setting the resolution
in xorg.conf, it works, but followed by frequent redraw issues.

This problem persists since Jaunty, and the first thing I'll suspect is
the driver for my via unichrome graphics, which has caused various
problems since I remember.
