I also note that turning on visual effects after switching to a
1400x1050 on LVCD and 1680x1050 for the VGA, it freezes identically as
far as I can tell to when I try it with visual effects enabled in the
first place.  However, it works fine if I boot up with both connected
and visual effects enabled.
