[Bug 419328] [NEW] attaching external monitor: laptop display shows corrupted desktop

using latest Karmic on a Lenovo S10e.

attaching external monitor and launching gnome-display-properties
i can see the mouse pointer on the external screen, the laptop screen is black, no reaction from mouse and keyboard
i can ssh into the laptop

last line of dmesg might be relevant:
[  140.379174] [drm] DAC-6: set mode  f
