Anton (The bug creator) - further tests show the following

 *- the monitor does not even have to have power for the boot process to
proceed correctly, just plugged into the VGA port on the Toshiba laptop

 *- this is an issue with or without ATI/AMD FGLRX graphics drivers
activated

newly upgraded to Ubunto 9.10 and boot up doesn't work without external monitor attached to laptop
