Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Xorg freeze with nvidia drivers. possibly caused by nvagp .. possible
workaround included.

This has been present since at least 8.04

Workaround appears to be to add

Option "NvAGP" "0" to the card device section of xorg.conf
