same things on eee pc 1005ha with kubuntu lucid (2.6.32-4-generic).
sometimes (looks like absolute random) the screen gets filled with one
color (usually black, but can be any other). the system is still
functional, but the display is useless. can be cured by any type of
power cycle. i use sleep/wake as the fastest. also the screen sometimes
flickers. enabling/disabling compositing or changing any other video
settings does not matter.
