[Bug 491155] [NEW] X reconfiguration from "low-res" to Nvidia proprietary shifts laptop screen left

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Due to other Nvidia driver bugs my laptop has been running using the
Open "nv" driver on Karmic. I installed a recent xserver-xorg update and
on reboot was confronted with a warning that I was running in "low-res"
mode. I checked the box asking if I wanted to install the right hardware
driver (optimistically hoping the Nvidia driver issues were addressed).
After doing so and Cancelling back to a console login prompt (there was
no reboot option) and rebooting, the kdm and Xfce desktop were both
shifted to the left approx 1/8th of the screen width. The right side is
padded with 11 slices of the last fraction of the screen. The
Applications menu cannot be seen as it is shifted off left. Photo
attached.

Hardware is the Acer Aspire 9300 with the bloody awful GeForce(TM) Go
7300 Nvidia chipset.
