Thank you for reporting this bug. A couple of things:
- You say that graphics is broken and that you could no longer get a working X session. Could you describe exactly what happens?
- Could you attach the output of `dmesg` from when it doesn't work?
- Does it work if you use the kernel options "splash nomodeset"?
