The synaptics.fdi is a hack I found on the web.  Reviewing `man 4 synaptics` now, I
see some of the datatypes specified in the .fdi are wrong for the named fields.  

When I correct the types, the X screen comes live.  So maybe some part of 
the X stack has become less tolerant of bad .fdi data?
