[Bug 495973] [NEW] low graphics mode after today's update

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After I rebooted after doing today's updates (which I believe included
kernel updates), my machine enters low graphics mode and I cannot switch
visual effects to normal or extra. It says that it is searching for
drivers. I don't understand this: I have never had this problem in the
past.
