I believe now that this is a hardware problem.

The marketing literature for both the Zotac motherboard and my ASUS
8400GS both say "DVI", but upon digging deeper I realize the DVI ports
on the motherboard and the working card in another machine are
different.   The specificiations for each spell out a difference:

    DVI-DZotac IONITX-A-U:  DVI-D
    ASUS EN8400GS SILENT/HTP/512M
